They were formed when people dug for peat in Medieval times and then they were later flooded. The fact that the broads were peat diggings is a relatively new discovery, in the 1950’s it was found that the sides of the broads were in fact vertical rather than a natural slope. These vast areas of land that were dug for fuel got to the point where eventually they began to fill with water, as water levels of the rivers rose the peat diggings filled with water and the Broads as we know them began to form. The Victorians used them for transporting heavy loads but nowadays they are here purely for pleasure, with the odd exception such as reed cutting for thatch. Local reed can be seen on many of the beautiful houses you can see along the broads. |
